Scintillating South Asian (Indian) dance performances, a new and vibrant way of looking at sexual and gender energies through 'an eye' of mystical and rich culture.

GFEST2014RADA.jpgAs a part of ‘Myths & Mythology’ theme of GFEST – Gaywise FESTival 2014, a newly commissioned performance work, specially for the festival, British Asian dancer Kali Chandrasegaram presents sensational ‘S(He)-dom’ Freedom versus He-or-She-dom. This is a new collaborative work with writer Harry Mycroft, visual artist Brian Dennis, rap band Ajah UK and explores mythical gender-bender identities. / UK première

Justin McCarthy, an internationally renowned established ‘Indian’ Bharatanatyam dance guru from the prestigious Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra will complete the double bill with his ground-breaking new dance work on myths, ‘Mohini: God Becomes Enchantress’. It is a collaboration with a kalamkari artist and scholar M V Bhaskar and karnatic musicians. The piece charters the fluidity inherent in various streams of gender, sexuality, eroticism and love. Discussion with GFEST 2014 commissioned choreographers Justin McCarthy and Kali Chandrasegaram. The choreographers will be joined by Jay Pather – Director of the Gordon Institute of Performing Arts, Cape Town; Hari Krishnan – Choreographer / Artistic Director of InDance, Toronto and Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University, and Subodh Rathod – Choreographer, Programme Manager Wise Thoughts.  The Discussion will be chaired by Dr Ann R David Head of Dance, Roehampton University.

GFEST 2014 Cabaret evening will see some super-entertainment ‘mythical’ performances. A star-studded line up presented by London Cabaret scene leading light Bird La Bird and features Sh!t Theatre and Mzz Kimberley. Promises to be a very enjoyable night full of surprises of mythical proportions!

GFEST2014RMCabaret.jpgBird La Bird is an artist who straddles comedy and performance art, she has been described as a "Queer Pearly Queen" and a "Haute Couture Fishwife". Bird favours collaboration and works with a host of artists and designers to create surreal and satirical performances. Performance highlights also include the V&A, LLGFF, National Portrait Gallery, Mother's Ruin, EYHO, Trashing Performance and WANC cafe.

Mzz Kimberley is winner of 2011 BOYZ award for 'best cabaret artist' whose voice has been compared many times to Bassey and Tina Turner. Mzz Kimberley can be seen around London town, Edinburgh festival, Europe, Australia, Israel, and the United States with her one woman live cabaret show, singing jazz, Gospel, blues and torch songs accompanied by her musical director Richard Link. 

Sh!t Theatre are Louise Mothersole and Rebecca Biscuit. They have performed original work nationally and internationally and were winners of the Total Theatre 'Emerging Company' Award 2013 and an Arches Brick Award 2013. Their most recent show 'Guinea Pigs on Trial' was shortlisted for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award 2014. They have been supported by Arts Council of England, Escalator East, The Yard Theatre, The Expansionists, The Visual Collective and The Showroom Chichester.
